On August 26th, 1977, a march was held in Washington, DC, to commemorate the life and work of Alice Paul, a prominent leader of the women's suffrage movement who was instrumental in the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment. During the event, 4,000 people marched from Pennsylvania Avenue to Lafayette Square. President Carter was also present at the event and met with leaders of 80 women's groups.
