This beautiful pictorial map of Boston was created by John Bachmann in 1850. Bachman is known for being one of the first, and finest, producers of urban bird's eye views. He published two views of Boston throughout his career, this one first, and another in 1877. You can find his later view in our collection as well.
In this earlier view, which is the first true bird's eye view that was made of Boston, we view the city from the southwest, with the Public Garden and the Common prominent in the foreground. Railroads can be seen around the edges of the city, with a busy harbor in the background. The perspective of this view highlights the importance of Boston's public spaces, while also noting the important role that shipping played in the city's economic development.
We have meticulously digitally restored this historic view of Boston, returning it to its original condition. The colors are vibrant once again, and all traces of wear and tear have been expertly removed. With that work done, we are proud to offer reproduction prints on museum-quality paper and canvas. Our reproduction prints are rated to last 100+ years without fading, so you can enjoy them for a lifetime!
