Princeton's Blair Hall was a gift of John Insley Blair, who served as a trustee from 1866 to 1899. When it was first built, the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks ended at the foot of the grand stairs, which led to Blair Arch, an entrance for those arriving by train. While this was convenient for visitors, it was a frustration to students living in the dorm, as the train was loud and the soot from its smokestack made its way into their rooms. In 1918, the railroad station was relocated. This vintage photograph of historic Blair Hall was captured in 1903, with a glass negative.
