The Hollensbury Spite House is a local landmark in Old Town, Alexandria, and is just a few blocks from the Old Town Print Gallery studio! The home was built in 1830, and while there are several conflicting stories about the reasons for its construction, the one that has stuck over time involves, as the same suggests, spite. The story goes that John Hollensbury built the home to prevent people from loitering in the alley next to his home and to prevent wagon wheels from damaging the side wall of his home. No matter what the true story is, the unique, tiny home draws visitors daily. This 1925 photograph of the home also features a vintage Ford Coupe on the cobblestone street.
Our skilled team has digitally restored this beautiful vintage image, taking care of this piece of local history. We worked on a digital scan of the original glass negative to repair damage and clean up dust. Our reproduction prints reflect the original, pristine condition of the image, allowing you to bring this unique moment in history into the present. Available on fine art paper and canvas, each of our prints is made with archival, museum-quality materials. Click here if you'd like to read a bit more about our prints!
