Gould Memorial Library was completed in 1900 to serve as the central library of New York University's Bronx campus. For more than half of the 20th century, the library was used for commencement ceremonies and other events. Due to a lack of space at Gould, New York University continued to build additional libraries on campus in the 1950s. In 1973, NYU sold its Bronx campus to the City University of New York, at which point the Gould Library was converted into an event space. This historic photograph of the building was captured in 1904, just a few years after it was built.

Working from a digital scan of the original glass negative, our team has carefully digitally restored this unique photograph of a historic building. We have digitally corrected fading, repaired damage, and cleaned up dust and dirt. Our digital restoration efforts help preserve the history in the photographs, maps, and posters in our collection.
