Between 1935-1944, the Resettlement Administration, the Farm Security Administration, and the Office of War Information employed numerous photographers to document American life. Frequent subjects included sharecroppers in the South and rural communities across the United States. Walker Evans was one of the photographers involved with this photographic endeavor, and his countless photographs of rural life in the American South give viewers a clear window back in time.
In March 1936, Evans captured this photograph of a row of waterfront warehouses in Louisiana. The brick buildings are covered in painted advertisements, with additional advertisements attached to the lower roofs extending from the warehouses. In front of the center warehouse for Harris Distributing Co., a man can be seen sitting in the back of a vehicle. This photograph is one of many taken by Evans during his time documenting life in the American South, and like the rest of the collection, it instantly transports the viewer back in time.
The Old Town Print Gallery team has carefully restored this image to its original condition, removing any traces of wear, tear, dirt, and dust.
