The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom took place on August 28th, 1963. Many leaders of the movement for civil and economic rights of African Americans gave speeches, with the most notable speech being Martin Luther King Jr.'s iconic "I Have a Dream" speech. In this speech, King called for an end to legalized racism and segregation.
This historic photo shows the crowd gathered on the National Mall. People are packed closely together, filling every available space. The Washington Monument can be seen in the distance, beyond the Reflecting Pool.
