Shirley Chisholm Announces Candidacy

This iconic portrait photograph was taken on January 25th, 1972, as Shirley Chisholm announced her candidacy for the presidential nomination. This historic moment was captured by photographer Thomas J. O'Halloran. Chisholm had already made history as the first black woman elected to the US Congress, and with her bid for the presidential nomination, she became the first black candidate for a major-party nomination for President, as well as the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.
