The Smithsonian Institution Building, generally referred to as the Smithsonian Castle, was the first Smithsonian Museum Building. Construction was completed in 1855, and this stunning photograph was taken not long after that. We don't have the exact date it was taken, but we do know this vintage image was captured sometime between 1860 and 1880.
Our team has digitally restored this historic image, repairing damage and correcting fading, to return the image to its original condition. With this work done, our reproduction prints reflect the original condition of the image, maintaining historical accuracy while using modern digital restoration and printing technology. We use archival, museum-quality paper and canvas for our prints, both of which are rated to last 100+ years.
