Between 1935-1944, the Resettlement Administration, the Farm Security Administration, and the Office of War Information employed numerous photographers to document American life. Frequent subjects included sharecroppers in the South and rural communities across the United States. Walker Evans was one of the photographers involved with this photographic endeavor, and his countless photographs of rural life in the American South give viewers a clear window back in time.
Taken in August of 1936, this photograph by Evans shows a local store in Marion, Alabama, called Thigpens, advertised as selling groceries and hardware. The vintage Coca-Cola ad takes viewers back in time, as does the advertisement painted onto the brick side of the store. The advertisement is for "Omega Flour", and remnants of a previous advertisement can be seen beneath the more recent paint.
We have digitally restored this classic Walker Evans photograph, returning it to its original condition. You can bring this slice of rural history home with our fine art prints, available on both paper and canvas. All prints are made by our skilled team at our Alexandria, Virginia studio.
