This 1922 photograph captures a unique moment in aviation history. Designed in the 1920s, the Caspar U.1, depicted in this vintage image, was intended to be disassembled and then stored for transport in a cylindrical container inside a submarine. From this container, it could be quickly reassembled and launched. Reports from testing claimed that a team of four men was able to remove the U.1 from its container and reassemble it in just over 1 minute. Two of these unique aircraft were purchased by the US Navy to be evaluated and tested.
The Old Town Print Gallery team has digitally restored this historic photograph. We worked on a digital scan of the original glass negative to complete this work, digitally repairing damage and removing dust and dirt. Digital restoration brings new life to old photographs and helps to preserve these unique, historic moments.
