A shift in the workforce took place during World War II, as more and more women began to fill roles previously held by men. Many factories where women had previously worked to produce household goods shifted to producing items needed for the war. Additionally, women began taking jobs in the aviation industry, working as riveters, welders, and inspectors. Commonly referred to as "Rosie the Riveter", these women played an essential role in the war effort and helped to reshape outdated views about women's abilities. This photograph, taken in 1942, portrays women installing fixtures and assemblies on a B-17 bomber's tail fuselage section at the Douglas Aircraft Company plant.
