Edwards Hall was built in 1879 for the purpose of accommodating the school's lower-income students. This dormitory was built to counter the luxurious Witherspoon Hall, which had been built two years earlier, and catered to Princeton's wealthier students. Edwards Hall was named after the third president of the College, Jonathan Edwards, and provided spartan accommodations. Despite its humble beginnings, Edwards Hall is now among the most desirable dormitories on campus. The building was extensively renovated in 1985, and upperclassmen flock to its single rooms and convenient location. This image of historic Edwards Hall was captured with a glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1906.
